WALKING AMONG THE SHEEP ON VENGSØY

One of the small things people remember
When spring arrives on Vengsøy, the landscape slowly begins to change.
The snow melts from the mountains, the light stays longer in the evenings, and fresh green grass starts appearing along the roads and open fields.

And then the sheep return outside.
For many of our guests, this becomes one of the most unexpectedly memorable parts of staying here.
Not because it’s dramatic or planned. But because it feels simple, calm, and real.

The sheep belong to Wenche, who runs the only farm on Vengsøy. During winter there are only a few sheep, but once lambing season is over, the island suddenly feels filled with small lambs and curious animals wandering through the landscape.
Usually there are around 15–18 sheep and lambs walking freely around the island during the warmer months, quietly eating grass, resting in the sun, or slowly making their way along the road.
And unlike many people expect — they’re not very shy.
In fact, many of them are surprisingly social.
Guests often come back smiling after a walk, telling stories about “the fluffy little sheep” that walked straight towards them looking for attention. Some follow people along the road for a while. Others happily accept scratches and gentle cuddles before continuing on their way.
There’s something charming about meeting animals like this in such a natural way.
No fences filled with tourists. No organised activity.
Just everyday life on the island.
For children especially, these encounters often become highlights of the stay. But honestly, adults seem just as excited.
Maybe because moments like this slow people down.
You stop walking for a while.
You laugh a little.
You notice the landscape differently.
And somehow, that’s very much what life on Vengsøy is about.
